Do you move toward opportunity or away from it?

Do you think ‘OMG no way’ or ‘yes Im up for that’ ?

Here’s the thing…

Fear can prevent you from being open to and taking opportunity. It can make you feel and believe that you won’t be able to cope….and this can create a pattern of moving away from the very thing that will benefit you.

This can lead to regret, frustration and further undermine your confidence.

Rather than feeling overlooked or  closed to opportunity, when you feel and show confidence, when you express your valid view point, when you enable others to have confidence in you, when you step up to challenges,… can feel open to opportunity and be willing to take the opportunities that present themselves in all aspects of your life.

Being open to opportunity, stepping up to challenges and achieving in your life fosters even greater confidence.

In my free facebook group we’ve been covering a 6 week programme of creating the confident you and this week is all about being open to opportunity. You can access my free report on the benefits of creating the confident you at this link

So what do I mean when I ask the question.. Do you move toward opportunity or away from it?

Well in NLP, part of the definition of a ‘well-formed goal’ is that it is stated in a forward moving, positive way.

You see each of us has a pattern of moving either towards or moving away from when faced with a situation, challenge or opportunity;-

Toward; This means you focus on the positive aspect of the situation and feel motivated to move forward.

Away from; This means you are moving away from a challenging situation and perhaps highlighting all the possible problems that you may need to find a solution to.

You may argue that a healthy dose of both is essential and I agree to a point.

However when it comes to being open to opportunity, being able to focus on what you positively want, opening up to possibility  and visualising your success will result in you moving forward more quickly and with more passion and enjoyment, because you are seeing the potential.

Because here’s the thing,

‘What if’s’ will only hold you back…..and you already know what you want to achieve.

You already know that you can make good judgements.

You can already trust your own instincts

You already know that you can deal with any situation that comes your way

…isn’t that right ?

In my 1:1 work with clients I help them to notice patterns that are outside of their conscious awareness, decisions that they have unconsciously made which are holding them back. Self awareness brings with it the ability to make conscious choice and conscious decision.

So….take some time to pay attention to your thoughts and language to identify which pattern you are following. This will help you to be more self aware and change the pattern.

Also, if you listen to the people around you, you will notice if they favour ‘toward or away from’ patterns….this is important as they may be giving you advice based on their own fears.

So what do you do if you are a ‘moving away’ from person in this instance of opening up to opportunity.

Identify what you need to do to move forward by asking yourself….

What do I need to do to move forward?

Once you’ve identified whats worrying you or holding you back you can address the issue……taking action to address this is key.

Challenge the fear

Reframe the problem

Decide that you can do this

I know what its like to have an ‘away from’ pattern because that used to be me…BIG STYLE ! I would literally have run from a so called opportunity because to me it felt more like danger. I was so caught up in my patterns of moving away from perceived danger of being judged, of getting it wrong, of not being good enough the I couldn’t even see the opportunity….and to be honest sometimes this pattern can creep up on me even now, but 95% of the time I am open and excited about opportunities that arise. I actively seek them out, and if I feel a bit out of my depth then I identify what I need to do to meet the challenge.

I can do this because I have worked on my self worth, my self belief and my self confidence. Im self aware and Im no longer ruled by fear……and you can do this too.

Now you are ready to Focus on ;-

The good things around you

The things that inspire you

Really getting to know what is important to you, your values.

Thinking about what you want to contribute in your life

In order to progress you need to be open to opportunity and cultivate an ‘open to opportunity mind-set’. There are opportunities all around you if you just take time to notice.

So here are my 7 tips to help you to open up opportunity in your life

  1. Create your well formed goal. Identify what you want to have in your life and how you are going to get it.
  2. Focus on what you positively want and visualise it. Connect with how that will feel for you, what benefits it will bring to your life.
  3. Foster your ‘open to opportunity’ mindset and have faith in you. You are capable of so much and there is so much within you to give.
  4. Take time to notice opportunity around you every day. Just look around you…how can you get involved, who can you help.
  5. Learn new skills, and keep up to date in your field. This way you will feel enabled, relevant, knowledgable, skilled.
  6. Get to know new people. Be curious, ask questions, connect….making a positive connection is everything.
  7. Volunteer yourself for projects and collaboration. This can be so interesting and bring a new perspective into your life.

I wish you well and I hope you allow yourself to enjoy the journey.
